The above website shows some different jobs that one may not even though of requiring math. These jobs are different and may spark the interest in your students. They may find a new career they like or just find a new path in life (especially for the grade 11 and grade 12s).
As a teacher, you can incorporate an assignment that students research jobs that require the subject or you can just use it as a presentation for the class. You can create a presentation and just have a fun half lesson on different career choices for math lovers or spark a new math lover due to a career.
Either way have fun with it!
Hey Courtney, always a great idea to show and remind them some examples of why its important. Especially how video game designers use so much math and so many students love playing video games.

ReplyDeleteThis could be a great site to guide students with a major assessment in a Math class. I'd avoid the senior classes, but it'd be a good idea to include in a grade 9 and 10 math class. Having them pick a career that involves math and presenting their findings would take them away from the standard textbook work and worksheets in math. It doesn't sound as fun, and students might not like the idea of presentations, but it'd be a way to build on this idea.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea; which can be used in many different classes. I gave my grade 11 chemistry students something similar to this. Students were to explore different careers require chemistry. Students were given time to choose, then on a Google classroom list, they had to post their career titles (to avoid any repetition)...
They presented their work by making slideshows and share them with the classroom, where students were asked to check three different presentations and discuss them.
I think it is important for educators to assist students think of potential careers which might interest them.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a very worthwhile suggestion. We are always encouraged to pose questions and place problems in real-world situations to make the curriculum more tangible. The value of class learning can really be highlighted in examining math-based careers. Why not go one step further and arrange for a visit from someone employed in one of these fields. I once took a small group from a high school to see a friend’s vector art design studio and they were fascinated. There are probably far more math careers out there than most students realise.
